HISTORY OF PLEASANT TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT
Pleasant Twp. Fire Dept. came under control of the Township Trustee in 1950. Prior to that, it was run from donations and the help of people within the community. The township purchased a new 1950 Ford FMC Pumper and moved the department into an old brick building on Lake Street in Laketon, which had housed a drug store and other various small businesses over the years. In 1974, the department acquired the old locker plant, which had a common wall with the current building and doubled the floor size of the current station.
The firefighters remolded one side of the upstairs for their meeting and training room. The other side upstairs was devoted to retaining the history of our community and a historical hall was formed to collect memorabilia and items of interest.
In 1989, planning was initiated to build a new fire station. Over five years later, in February 1995, Pleasant Township Fire Department moved into their new six bay station at 10459 N Ogden Road in Laketon. The fire station also houses the Pleasant Township Trustee, Deputy Assessor and a historical hall.
The current department has 17 firefighters, 15 of which are medical first responders and 2 medical first responders only for a total membership of 19. We have 5 pieces of apparatus, including a rescue with hydraulic rescue tools, 2 engines, tanker and wild land fire truck. The department averages 200 runs per year, which includes both medical and other emergency incidents. The firefighters receive ongoing training and the department averages 1,000 hours in training per year. They have mutual aid agreements with the area departments and provide them with assistance when needed.
In 1993, the Advisory Board and Township Trustee hired a full time driver for the day shift due to a lack of people working in the community who could take a fire truck to the scene of an emergency. Response times during the day have improved greatly due to this move.
